A compass needle is a little bar magnet.
When it is brought almost a bar magnet, its attractive field lines associate with that of the bar magnet.
Consequently, a compass needle demonstrates a redirection when brought close to the bar magnet. In either case, the compass needle will pursue the more grounded attractive field, be that the magnet, the attractive field instigated by current through the wire.
