Liquefied petroleum gas or liquid petroleum gas (LPG) is used as fuel in heating appliances, cooking equipment, and vehicles.
Varieties of LPG that are bought and sold include mixtures that contain mostly propane (C₃H₈), mostly butane (C₄H₁₀) and, most commonly, mixes including both propane and butane. Propylene, butylenes and various other hydrocarbons are usually also present in small concentrations.
LPG exists in two different forms, liquid and vapor. The pressure and temperature at which it is stored determine its state of form. Liquid LPG is colder, denser and heavier, while LPG vapor is warmer and much lighter.
In most domestic applications, LPG is used as vapor. LPG liquid boils and turns into gas vapor when some of the pressure is released into the gas bottle when the gas appliance is turned on.
When the valve that is fitted on the top of the cylinder is opened, it allows only the vapor to come out of the valve, which is used for cooking. This escape of vapor causes a pressure drop in the cylinder leading to more vaporization of the liquid. Thus, the contents of the cylinder are actually vaporized and only the gaseous form of LPG is used for heating purposes. Hence it is commonly called gas.
