Speaking about his mortality, Mandela once said: "Death is something inevitable. When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace." These are words of a man who knew his purpose in life and was dedicated to it. This purpose, as you can see from the statement above draws alot from the fundamental principles of Scouting, duty to God, duty to others and duty to self. His is a true example of living the Scout promise. There is a Swahili saying that; "Mti mkuu ukianguka, wana wa nyuni huyumba" which lossely translates to "when a big tree falls, the birds will scatter." Indeed the falling of Nelson Mandela is a great loss to the Scouting Movement and the world at large. Having been named after him, I have always drawn alot of lessons and inspiration from his struggles, writings and successes. The only way to honour this great hero is by us endeavoring to live by the Scout Promise and continuing with his work on Peace, Justice, Reconciliation and Human Rights. Rest in Peace, Brother Nelson Mandela!
