Elements combines with each other to get stability.Elements combines together to form a compound.

For example:-

$NaCl$,Sodium chloride also commonly known as table salt.This compound is formed by the combination of two elements Sodium(Na) and Chlorine(Cl).Sodium has one extra electron and chlorine is in need of one electron to gain stability(according to octet rule).Therefore Sodium completely Donates it extra electron to Chlorine.Hence,they both get stability after they combine to form an ionic bond between them.

This is the reason why elements prefers to combine with each other.
