Answer:

a) Soil is the foundation of basic ecosystem function. Soil filters our water, provides essential nutrients to our forests and crops, and helps regulate the Earth's temperature as well as many of the important greenhouse gases.

b) Soil minerals form the basis of soil. They are produced from rocks (parent material) through the processes of weathering and natural erosion. Water, wind, temperature change, gravity, chemical interaction, living organisms and pressure differences all help break down parent material.

c) Soil erosion is the displacement of the upper layer of soil; it is a form of soil degradation. This natural process is caused by the dynamic activity of erosive agents, that is, water, ice, snow, air, plants, animals, and humans. The effects of soil erosion go beyond the loss of fertile land. It has led to increased pollution and sedimentation in streams and rivers, clogging these waterways and causing declines in fish and other species. And degraded lands are also often less able to hold onto water, which can worsen flooding.

d) One of the main causes of soil erosion is water erosion, which is the loss of topsoil due to water. If the rainfall continues, water gathers on the ground, causing water flow on the land surface, known as surface water runoff, which carries soil away and deposits it elsewhere.

e) Three methods of soil conservation:

1. Afforestation: One of the best ways to conserve soil is to increase the are a under forests.

2. Checking Overgrazing: Grazing is very important. But overgrazing of forest and grassland by animals, especially by herds and flocks of sheep, goats, should be properly checked.

3. Constructing Dams: One of the scientific methods to check soil erosion. Soil erosion is happens maximum by river flood can be avoided by constructing dams across the river.
