Question

If the internal dimensions of a closed box made up of wood 1.5 cm thick are 24 cm, 18 cm and 12 cm. Find the volume of the wooden box.

Given

  • Internal dimensions of a closed box -
  • Length of the box = 24 cm
  • Breadth of the box = 18 cm
  • Height of the box = 12 cm
  • The thickness of the wood of the box = 1.5 cm

To find

  • Volume of the wooden box.

Concept

  • Firstly, find the internal volume of the closed box.
  • Then add (1.5 + 1.5)cm from the dimensions.
  • And using the new dimensions find the external volume.
  • Volume of the wooden box = External volume - Internal volume.

Solution

Internal volume -

Volume = length × breadth × height

⇒ (24 × 18 × 12) cm³

⇒ 5184 cm³

  • Internal volume = 5184 cm³

External dimensions of the box

External length -

  • 24 + 1.5 + 1.5 = 27 cm

External breadth -

  • 18 + 1.5 + 1.5 = 21 cm

External height -

  • 12 + 1.5 + 1.5 = 15 cm

External volume of the box -

Volume = length × breadth × height

⇒ (27 × 21 × 15) cm³

⇒ 8505 cm³

  • External volume of the box = 8505 cm³

Volume of the wooden box = External volume - Internal volume

⇒ (8505 - 5184) cm³

⇒ 3321 cm³

  • Volume of the wooden box = 3321 cm³
