All aerobic creatures need oxygen for cellular respiration, which uses the oxygen to break down foods for energy and produces carbon dioxide as a waste product. Breathing, or "external respiration", brings air into the lungs where gas exchange takes place in the alveoli through diffusion.

Breathing is the processes of delivering oxygen to where it is needed in the body and remove carbon dioxide. ... This is inert, our bodies have no ability to react chemically with that nitrogen. At the same time, carbon dioxide-nitrogen mix moves from the capillaries into the air sacs.
