Akbar and Birbal
One day, Akbar said to one of his ministers in the assembly hall, "You are walking with a frown."
2 "What is wrong, Ahmed Khan?"
*"Lord, last night somebody stole all my valuables. I have lost everything. I am ruined,” Ahmed
Khan cried.
5 "What! How is that possible?" Akbar said. "The minister's houses are the safest in our kingdom."
6 "That I know."
> "Hmm ... It is impossible for an outsider to break into a minister's house. This has been done by a
8 minister of the court," pondered Birbal.
9“Birbal! Find the thief who has dared to do this!" ordered Akbar. Birbal thought for a moment
10 and told the servants, "Fetch one of the donkeys from my house and tie it securely to a
1 pillar in a room close to the assembly hall."
12 "This donkey has special powers to identify thieves," said Birbal. "I request all the ministers
13 to go into the room one by one and lift the donkey's tail."
14 After everyone had been to the room, he asked, "Please show me your palms, my friends."
15 After he had seen their palms he remarked, "Why don't you have a black patch on your hands.
16 like the others, friend Alim Khan?"
17"I ... I have washed my h-hands," stuttered Alim Khan.
18 Birbal revealed, "My Lord, I painted the donkey's tail black. Alim Khan didn't touch
19 it out of fear."
20 "Great, Birbal! Take a thousand gold coins as a reward. You have proved your intelligence,"
21 praised Akbar.
