Raw wool undergoes many steps before it is finally ready to make an item of clothing.
Explanation:
- Firstly, the raw wool is obtained by shearing it with the help of a spinning machine.
- Before that, it is straightened and combed. The dirt and grease are removed using machines.
- Different types of yarns are produced depending on the tendency and thickness of the fiber.

The fibres (sheep) are straightened, combed and rolled into yarn and the longer fibres are made into wool for sweaters and the shorter fibres are spun and woven into woollen cloth. The process of removing greese, dirt and dust from the hair (sheep) is called scouring
Silk fibres are used for weaving silk cloth. The silk yarn (thread) is obtained from the cocoon of the silk moth. The silk fibres are then spun into silk threads, which are woven into silk cloth by weavers.
Explanation:
Wool Processing
- The sheep's fleece is stripped from the body together with a thin layer of fur. That is what shearing is called. During hot weather fur is usually shed and the sheep live without their protective fur cover. The hair is packed with woolen fibers, and woolen fibers are then produced to make woolen yarn. Sheared skin with hair is washed thoroughly into tanks to eradicate grease, dust & dirt. This is known as Scouring. Today machines are used to scouring.
- Sorting is done after scouring. The hairy skin is sent to a factory wherein the hair is segregated or filtered into various textures. The thin fuzzy fibers known as burrs are then selected from the fur. The wool is ready for weaving. The fabrics are scrubbed again and sealed. The sheep's natural fleece is brown, white, or black, and can be "dyed" in varying colours. The fibers are stretched and twisted, and long fibers are made into "sweater" and the short fibers are made into woolen cloths.
Silk Processing
- The female's silk moth sets eggs with hatch "larvae" called "Silkworms" or "Silkworms." It then grows in size & as the "caterpillar" is just about to reach the next phase of life known as "pupa", it weaves the net first s as to hold & swings "from side to side" the head in formation of figure eight .
- The fiber of the caterpillar secretes a protein that "hardens" on "exposure" to air and turns into silk fiber in these movements. The caterpillar entirely coats itself with silk fibers and becomes a "pupa". This cover is called Cocoon. For the weaving of silk cloth, silk fibers are used. The silk thread is produced by the "silk moth cocoon".
- A "pile of cocoons" is used for getting silk fibers & the cocoons are keptunder the sun or heated or "exposed to steam'. The process of removing thread for use as silk from the "cocoon" is known as "silk reeling". Reeling takes place in "special machines" that release the "cocoon silk thread" or fiber, and the silk fibers are then "spun into silk threads" which weavers weave into silk cloth.
