1. A volcano is a mountain that has lava (hot, liquid rock) coming out from a magma chamber under the ground, or did have in the past. Volcanoes are formed by the movement of tectonic plates. The Earth's crust is broken into 17 major, rigid tectonic plates. These float on a hotter, softer layer in its mantle.
2. This melted rock is known as magma. And anything that erupts magma is a volcano. Under volcanoes are giant pools filled with piping hot mush. That's what I learned from my friend John Wolff, a geologist at Washington State University. “It's almost like thick oatmeal,” Wolff explained.
3. The crater is the bowl shaped opening located at the top of the volcano. The crater is also the steep sided walls made of hardened lava that surround the main vent. Lava can flow from the main vent, but not all volcanoes eject large amounts of lava.
