dowry _ __ _Question – 1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: 2×5 =10

a) Dowry systems is a blot on the Indian society. It is an old custom which has outlived its utility.

According to the Dowry Prohibition act 1961, dowry has been defined as any money or gifts

received or given as consideration for the marriage of a daughter by her parents. It needs to be

dealt with firmness. In fact, dowry is the sale price of the bride. The dowry system in India is a

long-standing evil. We read in the newspaper daily about heart-breaking stories of young girls

committing suicide or being murdered because their parents have not been able to give big

dowries. The dowry system has deep dug in the Hindu society, reducing all the legislation against

in to a dead letter.

In the recent past, India has taken some anti-dowry steps. In some states dowry has been declared

as illegal. Demanding and giving dowry has been declared a sort of social crime. But the legal steps

against dowry system are not enough. We shall have to make a social climate which does not

favour giving and taking dowry in any form. Boys and girls in the school and colleges should take

pledge neither to accept dowry or not to give dowry.
