Dr. Potu Narasimha Rao, a famous scholar and an eminent cytologist belonged to a poor family in Muppala village of Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. He completed his graduation in Agriculture and did his MS at IARI, New Delhi. In USA he did his research work on the cytogenetics of tobacco plant. During his research, a cell line called HELA, isolated from a human tumour was established in 1952. He worked on this cell line and received his PhD in 1963. He shifted his attention then from plant cytogenetic to the field of cancer cells in culture medium. He conducted research in cell kinematics and studied the “triggering factor” of cell division.

He found that human cells either normal or cancer cells in culture media usually divide every 20 to 24 hours. But actually normal mitosis is completed in 40 to 60 minutes. The period in between two cell divisions is called interphase. The interphase further consists of 3 phases G1, S and G2 phases.

To understand the functional relationship between these phases, Dr.Rao and his research associate Dr. Johnson did some elegant experiments on cell fusion technique. His researches revealed that the cell cycle is sequential Unidirectional and controlled by a series of chemical signals. His experiments are considered to be very valuable in the study of the cell cycle. This study has given new rays of hope to the budding scientists to carry out researches on cell division.
