Yes, Dr Sadao was a patriotic Japanese as well as a dedicated surgeon too .At one side as a doctor and being a human he did the treatment of the white man who was his enemy . Before being a Japanese he was a human and for him saving a man's life was more important than leaving him to die.

On the other hand as a patriot he told the general about the white man when he went to general. The general told him that he will send some assassins to kill the white man . Dr. Sadao waited for the assassins , , , but assassins didn't came came . Hence this shows that Dr.Sadao should be honoured by both the values of a patriot and a dedicated surgeon.

He kept informing the Japanese army about white men which shows his patriotic values.

He never left his patients and gave them treatment even if they belonged to the enemy camp.

This shows that he was a dedicated surgeon who treated his patients without hurting interests of his own country.
