The reason was that Dr.sadao was in the dilemma that whether to help the white man or not. Because anyone can complaint against Dr. Sadao on charge of giving shether to the enemy. However he knew that they would get arrested if they give shelter to the white man in their house. The man was prisoners of war who had escaped with a bullet on his back. As japan was at war with American, harbouring an enemy meant being a traitor to Japan. In that case he might be treated as a traitor despite his compassion for his fellow beings.
