Answer:

Measures to prevent its spread highlighted

Scores of children joined a campaign organised by Tamil Nadu Speed Skating Association here on Friday evening to create awareness of prevention of swine flu and dengue. Precautionary measures to prevent the spread of AH1N1 virus were highlighted during the schedule.

S. Muruganandam, general secretary of the association, flagged off the skating, which commenced from the Collectorate premises and concluded near Tuticorin old harbour, where a programme was held. S.T. Chellapandian, Tuticorin MLA, who presided over the programme, said the State government was taking all efforts to prevent the spread of swine flu and dengue.

Pradeep V. Krishnakumar, City Health Officer, Tuticorin Corporation, said people affected by cold, cough and throat pain were advised to go to the screening centres. People were also asked to keep themselves away from crowds and wash their hands often. Symptoms of swine flu included high fever, running nose, sore throat, frequent sneezing and coughing. Dr. Krishnakumar said swine flu was curable if diagnosed in the early stage.

About 80 percent of swine flu was caused by contamination through fomites and the rest spread through air-borne infection. Hence, he advised people to wear masks, preferably the N 95 mask. Besides, three-layered masks could also be used. The winners of the eight-kilometre skating competition were given prizes. Three children under the category of below 10 years of age and three participants above 10 years of age were honoured on the occasion. As many as 120 children took part in the campaign.
