Explanation:

To wear a face mask or not? The advice has been confusing. In China, Hong Kong, and Singapore, the general public has been encouraged to wear masks to prevent getting or spreading the novel coronavirus.

In the U.S., a growing chorus of experts have supported mask-wearing for the general public though there are issues with shortages and access. On Friday, the Trump administration recommended that Americans wear basic cloth or fabric face masks when in public to reduce transmission.

The new recommendation, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, aims to reduce the risk that people who are infected but asymptomatic will spread the virus.

Why are so many countries revisiting or changing their recommendations on wearing masks?

There is growing pressure to look at face-mask guidelines as countries become more desperate to try every strategy they can. Many look at Asian countries where the practice is widespread and where the coronavirus pandemic has been better controlled.

Many experts say there’s no harm in wearing a mask, so even if the benefit is modest it is worth doing. “We’re in a situation where any little bit makes a difference,” says Don Milton, a professor of environmental and occupational health at the University of Maryland School of Public Health in College Park, Md.

There are so many kinds of masks. What’s the difference between N95 respirator masks, surgical masks and regular old masks?

N95 respirator masks filter out 95% or more of particles of all sizes and are worn in health-care settings where workers are exposed to a high number of infectious people. Experts say they need to be fitted to be effective, and cleaned and maintained properly. There is an extreme shortage of N95 respiratory masks, so experts say such masks need to be reserved for health-care workers.

“We can’t be using masks designated for health-care workers,” says Joe Allen, an assistant professor of exposure assessment science at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Even without a shortage, N95 masks aren’t appropriate for everyday use by the general public, says Jeremy Howard, a distinguished research scientist at the University of San Francisco and a big proponent of mask-wearing. “Those need to be properly fitted,” he says. “They are designed for aerosol-generating procedures, not for day-to-day walking around.”

Surgical masks should also be reserved for health-care workers due to shortages. These are also used in medical settings and protect against larger respiratory droplets but aren’t as effective with smaller droplets.
