Answer:

Van Mahotsav was launched in the year 1950 by Shri Kanhaiyalal. M. Munshi, the then Union Minister for Agriculture and Food to create an enthusiasm in the popular mind for the preservation of forest and planting of trees, as "trees mean water, water means bread and bread is life". It was also hoped that it would create tree consciousness among the people.

Van Mahotsav, a week long festival of tree planting is organised every year in the month of July all across India and lakhs of trees are planted.

The planting of trees during vanmahatsova was to serve the following purposes :

To provide fuel and thus release cowdung for use as manure.

To increase production of fruits and add to the potential food resources of the country.

To help creation of shelterbelts around agricultural fields to increase their productivity.

To provide fodder leaves for cattle to relieve intensity of grazing over reserved forests.

To provide shade and ornamental trees for the landscape.

To provide small poles and timber for agricultural implements, house construction and fencing.

To help conservation of soil and further deterioration of soil fertility.

To inculcate tree consciousness and love of trees amongst the people; and

To popularise the planting and tending of trees in farms, villages, municipal and public lands for their aesthetic, economic and protective needs.

Forest and Environment Department Meghalaya organizes tree planting in school, college and community land during the month of July every year to observe Van Mahotsav. The Department also distributes seedlings to individuals and institutions to mark the occasion.

(Enters stage) GIRL: Where's my ball? I defied my mother, and now this is happening to me. Have you seen my ball, she asks the crowd (before continuing). . What's wrong with you? the tree asks, staring at it. Are you sobbing? Who struck you? Did you harm the tree, she asks the crowd. .

TREE: Don't worry, nobody hurt me. You are too young; you lack comprehension. Tell me your name. .

WOMAN: Ana However, what's wrong with you, please? .

You didn't get me, RABBIT (going onto the stage). You failed to catch me! He and the girl both fall to the ground after tripping.

GIRL: Oh no! Take care.

RABBIT: Oh, I'm really sorry. However, what is wrong? Do you have a cold or are you crying? (To the tree) .

RABBIT AND GIRL: Tell us!

TREE: A bird alerted me to a woodcutter's impending attempt to bring me down.

RABBIT: Will they take you out with a saw?

To chop you down? (The Dove, the Flower, and the Bird enter the stage.) Where will I slink off to?

BIRD: Where will I build my nest?

What am I going to eat, DOVE?

Who will provide me with shade?

SUN: The forest will be so depressing!

RABBIT: I'll use my own strength to defend you.

There he comes, says BIRD. The woodcutter is there. Come on, let's meet up.

Which tree should I cut?, asks the WOODCUTTER (who enters the stage whistling). I'll pick one (looks at the tree). This one appeals to me (starts chopping the tree. The axe is thrown to the ground as The Rabbit enters the stage. When the bird enters the scene and likewise drops the axe to the ground, the woodcutter appears surprised, looks around, picks up the axe, and attempts to chop the tree again. But what's going on? Why do these creatures bother me? (Begins felling the tree. (The screaming tree)

TREE: Oh, no, don't do that (crying).

Don't you pay attention to how he sobs, girl (entering the stage).

WHO IS CRYING? WOODCUTTER What tree? Who is concerned with the tree? (Audience member) Do you all care?

Girl: We are concerned. He is our friend, he provides us fruit, he guards us, he purifies our air.

WOODCUTTER: I need wood to cook and stay warm since I have a family.

You can find wood elsewhere, girl. Old, dried-out branches and trees can be found to contain timber. This tree is a buddy of ours, and we will look after him (she leaves the stage).

RABBIT: If you're courageous, join me in the battle! (Enters the stage). Tree, I'll fight for you.

Who do you want to fight with?, asks the WOODCUTTER (pushing the Rabbit).

I, RABBIT. without anyone! Who made a comment regarding fighting? (Exiting the stage)

We won't abandon you, girl (who enters the stage and hugs the tree). He'll have to annihilate us as well.

(Looking impressed) All right, that should be enough. I'll search elsewhere, perhaps for dry trees. I am not an evil person. (Says to the crowd) Don't stare at me like that. That makes sense now. Leave the trees alone (leaves the stage).

GIRL: We succeeded! (jumping joyfully). We succeeded.

RABBIT: (ascending to the podium) Where is he? Where is he now?

GIRL: He left; he realised. Our acquaintance is presently safe and sound.

TREE: I'm overjoyed. I'm grateful, my pals.
