Bentonite is an absorbent natural smectite clay. It has a colloidal structure in water. Each smectite particle is composed of thousands of submicroscopic platelets stacked in a sandwich fashion with a layer of water between each. A single platelet is 1 nm thick and up to several 100 nm across.
