The answer has been stated below.

Explanation:

The story is "Playing the Game" by Arthur Mee.

Alan was an adolescent boy. He was chosen to play for the school cricket match for which he was mightily proud of.

Alan was a kind boy who helped an old man to climb up the hill while he was on his way to the match ground.

Though he was getting late for the match, he did not leave the old man alone but waited for someone who can help the old man home.

Alan reached late to the ground and lost his chance to play the cricket but in the words of his father, he played well in his life, by being kind.

Alan was rewarded for his kind act to the old man by a bicycle.

Playing the Game is a thought provoking short story that focuses on the human values that are fast disappearing.

Explanation:

  • The story highlights the character of Alan. It is through him that the story revolves.  Alan is a good natured boy.  He is obedient and hard working.
  • He is also a very good sportsman.  He was training under his father to become a good cricketer.  Alan was very disciplined. He took his cricket training very seriously.
  • He was also ambitious. He wanted to be a good cricketer and achieve victory for his team.  Alan was also a very compassionate and helpful person.
  • He was selfless with his help. He helped the weak and old man climb slowly up the hill keeping aside his much coveted cricket match for which he had been preparing hard and his father had promised him a bicycle if he played well.
  • Thus in Alan we find a boy of a strong and good character.
