The qualities present in Antonio are as follows :

The Weakest character of Merchant of Venice

  • Antonio was the weakest character in Merchant of Venice since he was melancholic and sad.
  • Antonio had a weak heart and his weak condition was witnessed in the trial scene.

Melancholic character

  • Antonio was melancholic and it was his characteristic trait.
  • Antonio had only one friend who was about to get married.
  • He had no family and he was worried  about Bassanio's future
  • These could be some reasons for his melancholy.

Other notable mentions

  • Antonio was not at all innocent in my eyes.
  • He committed sins against Shylock . He called Shylock a "dog" , spitted in his beard , and he insulted Shylock's religion.
  • Yet Shakespeare did not do anything against Antonio . He was finally rescued in the Trial scene by Portia.
  • Shakespeare hoped to impress the audience by insulting a religion !

Hope it helps

Here's Your Answer

Antonio is a wealthy Venetian trader-the merchant of Venice. He is a royal Merchant a successful businessman and a popular and respected figure in Venice, owning a fleet of trade ships. In the Play, he is unquestionably The Hero around whom the interest in the story revolves. Bassanio, with great Insight, sums up the character of Antonio and says he is one in whom:

The ancient Roman honour more appears
Than in any that draws breath in Italy.

His idealism:
Antonio is the model Christian, as defined by elizabethan society. He represents, among other things, the ideal of nobility in friendship.
He enters into business with a high moral sense and purity. Unlike, other average traders, he is not selfish, unimaginative or pompous. All The Merchant of Venice show respect to him for these qualities in him. He is one of the most generous souls in Italy. He has actually rescued many more returns from the clutches of shylock, the Jewish money lender.

His friendship:
Antonio is peerless as a friend. He loves kinsman, Bassanio, dearly and is ready to do anything for him. In order to help bassanio he unhesitatingly science the hazardous bond of shylock. Even when he is caught in the clutches of shylock on his failure to honour the bond, and that appears to be certain to him, he has no word of reproach for bassanio and does not show any bitterness for him.

His righteousness:
Self-righteousness is a marked trait in Antonio's character. It is this read that makes him hate shylock who practices Ashley and tortures people. Antonio hates Shylock's meaness and cruelty. Such practices by shylock In Flames antonio's hatred for him.

His religious intolerance:
Antonio is a true Christian and hate the Jews. This is perhaps the only blemish in his character. His treatment of shylock is inhuman.

His philosophic calm:
Antonio is remarkable for his philosophic calm.
Even when faced with death, he shows the noblest kind of resignation. In the trial scene, when bassanio make efforts to soft in the heart of shylock, Antonio asks him to desist. He simply attributes his bad luck to Fortune and with a quiet dignity asks the court to pronounce the judgement.

His melancholy:
When the play biggins, we find that Antonio is engrossed by a strange meloncholy. Friends attribute that his sadness is due to anxiety for the safety of his Merchandise Laden ships at sea. Another reason for his sadness is due to his falling in love. However, Antonio refuses both the suggestions. He says that he is unable to give any specific reason for his sadness.

His Magnanimity:
Antonio is a generous person. Also a healthy man, he is careless about his money. He lends money without interest and saves the victims of shylock from his clutches. He is loved by all for his benevolent nature. Towards the end of the play, we find that he restores to Shylock half his property and compels him to make his will in favour of Jessica.

To sum up, Antonio, Though a perfect gentleman, a good friend and a noble heart, yet lacks dynamism which one expects in the hero of a play.
