Hey !!
Alphonse Daudet presents M. Hamel as the traditional school teacher in his story ''The Last Lesson''. He is always seen with the ruler under his arm and is thought to be cranky by his students like Franz, The students fear a scolding from him if they are late to school or don't learn their lessons in grammar. He always maintain strict discipline in class. The author presents the other side of M. Hamel's character only after the order from Berlin arrives. M. Hamel is now a transformed man. He wears his best dress to school as it is his last day. He teaches the last lesson in French as German will be imposed in school from the next day. He requests his students and the village elders to guard their native language French and learn to love it. M. Hamel's sincere love for French and French arouses patriotic feeling in the students and the village elder Franz, who was indifferent to the French before learns to love it now. M. Hamel leaves the classroom chocked with emotion. He praises his country and the language French and wins the respect of one and all.
Good luck !!
