First of all, what are ruminating animals?

  • Ruminating animals are those herbivorous animals who you possess compartments of stomach.

Food passes in various parts of the digestive tract of ruminating animals as follows:

  • Rumen: Microbes present in this compartment ferment the dietary substances in to volatile fatty acids, which constitutes the main energy supplying component for ruminants.

  • Reticulum: This compartment is present in association with the rumen.

  • Omasum: This compartment absorbs water and other nutrients from the simplified dietary components.

  • Abomasum: This compartment contains glands , similar to a non-ruminant stomach and hence secretes DIGESTIVE JUICES.
