Guard are the epidermal cells with chloroplast. The opening and closing of stomata is a function of guard cells. Guard cells are present in pairs with a gap between them which form stomatal pore. The stomatal pores become open when water is freely available and the guard cells become turgid and closed when water availability is low and the guard cells become flaccid. Guard cells help to regulate the rate of transpiration by opening and closing ther stomata.
