Answer:

An  Amoeba  feeds on algae, rotifiers, protozoans, and even other small  Amoeba. It forms finger-like projections called pseudopodia  (meaning false feet). Pseudopodia help the  Amoeba  in moving and capturing food.

When an  Amoeba  senses its prey, it pushes out its pseudopodia around its prey and engulfs it. The food thus eaten gets trapped in the food vacuole.

Digestive juices are secreted inside the food vacuole in an  Amoeba.  Theses juices act on the food and break it down into smaller components. The digested food is later absorbed by the Amoeba  for growth, maintenance, and multiplication. The waste material or undigested food is then expelled out of the body.

Phagocytosis is the process of nutrition in amoeba, where the food intended for consumption is engulfed completely by the entire organism.

Explanation:

  • This nutrition mode in amoeba is called the holozoic nutrition. The entire process involves ingestion of food – that is consumption, digestion – breaking down food into smaller particles, and egestion of the remaining materials.
  • Amoeba does not have any specialised structure or organ for nutrition. The process occurs through the help of pseudopodia, which are present along the surface of the amoeba.
  • The amoeba uses pseudopodium as structure of locomotion as well.
