The Ancient Regime was the administrative and cultural system of the Kingdom of France from the Late Middle Ages till 1789 when inherited government and the feudal system of French aristocracy were destroyed by the French Revolution. The Ancient Regime was commanded by the late Valois and Bourbon sovereignty.
The word is occasionally used to indicate to the comparable feudal systems of the time elsewhere in Europe. The organizational and social arrangements of the Ancient Regime were the consequence of years of state-building, parliamentary acts, regional disputes, and civil wars, but they continued and the Valois Dynasty's efforts at re-establishing authority over the disseminated administrative centers of the nation which were hindered by Wars of Religion.
