From the inside, an explanation of how the heart works.

Explanation:

  • A pericardial sac surrounds the heart and is lined by the parietal layers of a serous membrane. The epicardium is formed by the visceral layer of the serous membrane.
  • There are 4 chambers of the heart, Right atrium, Right ventricle, Left atrium, and Left ventricle.
  • There are two types of valves in the heart that maintain blood flow in the right way. Atrioventricular valves connect the atria and ventricles, whereas semilunar valves connect the bases of the major arteries leaving the ventricles.
  • Blood is pumped from the right atrium to the right ventricle, which then pumps it to the lungs, where it is oxygenated. Blood goes from the lungs to the left atrium and subsequently to the left ventricle. It is then injected into the systemic circulation.
