Draw a labelled circuit diagram showing three resistors R1, R2 and R3 connected in series with a battery (E), a rheostat (Rh), a plug key (K) and an ammeter (A) using standard circuit symbol. Use this circuit to show that the same current flows through every part of the circuit. List two precautions you would observe while performing experiment.

Answer:

The equivalent resistance of the circuit

R = R1 +R2 +R3+Rh

As these are connected in series

Ammeter is used measure current in the circuit.

Battery E provides potential difference across the positive and negative terminal because of which current flows in the circuit.

Rheostat is used to vary resistance. With change in resistance, current would vary as same amount of current would flow throughout this series circuit.

When key is closed, circuit is complete. Current:

From ohm's law:

E = I R

E = I (R1 +R2 +R3+Rh)

With increase in resistance offered by rheostat, the current would decrease.

Two precautions that must be taken while performing this experiment:

1. Ammeter must be placed in series in the circuit.

2. Key must be closed while taking the readings of the ammeter.
