(a) The large intestine is the part of the digestive tract that is effective for the uptake of water. The water is maximally absorbed from digested food residues.

Functional cells help digested substances enter the bloodstream through the intestinal wall. Most processes in which carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are separated and lessened to comparatively simple organic compounds happen in the small intestine.
