The diagram for electrolysis of HCl is given .

Hydrochloric acid is strong electrolyte .

Explanation:

Hydrochloric acid is : HCl

In an electrolysis :

  • The electric energy is converted into chemical energy .
  • When current is passed the electrolyte breaks into ions .
  • Theses ions move to different electrodes and undergoes respective oxidation and reduction at different electrodes .

Let us see the electrolysis of HCl

On passing current, HCl breaks into --> H⁺  +  Cl⁻

The Hydrogen ions moves to cathode and chloride ion moves to anode as show respective reactions.

Reaction at anode

2Cl⁻  - electron --> Cl₂

Reaction at cathode

2H⁺ +  electron --> H₂
