A lake consists of three zones.

1) The littoral zone- It is the area near the shore where sunlight penetrates to the sediments and allows growth of aquatic plants.

2) The limnetic zone- It is the zone which has open water area in which light does not penetrate to the bottom. It is the zone of planktons and nektons.

3) Benthic zone- It comprises the bottom of the lake and shows perence of coral reefs, scallops and mussels.
