take point P outside the line

take point A anywhere on line mn

join a point A and point P

keep your compass at point A and draw an Arc

keep the same measure and draw an Arc placing your compass at point P

measure the distance with a compass between the points of intersection of first arc to the arms of angle A

taking the same distance please your compass at point P and draw another arc
