The internal division of 2:3 of line segment is attached.

On measurement AC= 2.2 cm and CB= 3.3 cm

Given:

  • A line segment of 5.5 cm.

To find:

  • Divide it internally in the ratio 2:3.
  • What is the length of each part ?

Solution:

Concept to be used:

Make an acute angle with line segment and do equal parts total of both ratios.

Steps of construction:

  1. Draw a line segment of 5.5 cm with the help of pencil and scale,say it is AB.
  2. Draw an acute angle below AB. let say it is AX.
  3. Make 5 (2+3) equal segments of AX.
  4. Draw A_5B, i.e. meet point A_5 with B.
  5. Measure the \angle AA_5B, (it is 62°) with the help of protector or compass.
  6. Make that same angle at A_2, i.e.\angle AA_2C=62^{\circ} .Thus, A_2C should be parallel to A_5B.
  7. The point C divides the line segment AB in 2:3.

Verification:

On measurements it is found that

AC= 2.2 cm

and

CB= 3.3 cm

Thus,

AC:CB= 2:3
