Draw a line segment of length 8.6 cm. Bisect it and measure the length of each part.

The length of each part is 4.3 cm.

Steps of construction:

Draw a line AB of scale 8.6 cm.

Draw an arc from point A or point B with a scale of half the measure of line AB.

Mark that point as C.

We have, AB = AC + BC

(as C is the mid point of line AB)

AC = CB = AB/2

Therefore, the length of each part,

AC = CB = 8.6/2 = 4.3 cm

AC = BC = 4.3 cm

Explanation:

  • Construct a line segment AB of length 8.6 cm.
  • Taking A as centre and radius more than half of AB, draw arcs on both sides of the line segment AB.
  • Taking the same radius and B as centre, draw arcs on the both sides of  the line segment AB, cutting the previous two arcs at E and F.
  • Draw a line segment from E to F intersecting AB at C.
  • On measuring AC and BC, we get: AC = 4.3 cm and BC = 4.3 cm

So that AC = BC = 4.3 cm
