The earth axis is tilted to 23.5 degrees and it gives four seasons as summer, winter, autumn, and spring. The different parts of the earth are titled to the sun at different times of the year.

As the sun's rays hit the earth in direct angles, more in summer than in winter as the days are more longer. In winter sunlight hits the earth at extreme angles and the days are short.

The summer solstice starts on June 21 and marks the beginning of the summer, winter solstice starts in months of Dec 21, vernal equinox starts on March 21, in the north hemisphere as spring season and winter in the south hemisphere.  

Autumn equinox takes place on Sept 21 and marks the fall in the northern hemisphere and spring in the southern hemisphere.
