A Reverberatory furnace is a furnace in which roof and walls are heated by flames and radiate heat on to material in the centre of the furnace.

Used for smelting or refining in which fuel is not in direct contact with ore but heats it by flame blown over it from another chamber. The heat passes over the hearth in which ore is kept and then reverberates back.

The hearth is made dense and impervious so the heavy matte. It is metallurgical or process furnace that isolates the material being processed from contact with the fuel, but not from contact with combustion of gases.

Applications are :-

1)Metallurgical melting furnaces

2)Lower temperature processing furnaces used for metallic ores and other minerals.
