Canterville Ghost’s Reformation
In chapter 5 we come to know that Canterville ghost was fed up of his life as a ghost. His 300 years long life had left him penitent and remorseful for his past mistakes. Life had become almost unbearable for him. The Otis family had somehow made him feel the need of reformation and salvation. He had been living a lonely life of regret, restlessness, sorrow, and never ending pain.
He confided to Virginia he had not slept for the last 300 years. He expressed his wish and urge to be free of the curse that was forcing him to lead a ghost’s life. He requested Virginia to help him open the portals of death’s house. Kind-hearted Virginia helped him free of the curse. Finally he got salvation and rested peacefully in the garden of death. All this happened because of his strong urge to reform himself.
