Draw a ray diagram in each of the following cases to show the formation of
image, when the object is placed :
(i) between optical centre and principal focus of a convex lens.
(ii) anywhere in front of a concave lens.
(iii) at 2F of a convex lens.
State the signs and values of magnifications in the above mentioned
cases (i) and (ii).

i) The image is formed behind the object on the same side as the object, the nature of the image is virtual, erect and magnified.

ii) The image is formed between the principal focus and the optical center.

iii) The image is also formed at 2f of the convex lens, real inverted and of the same size as that of the object.

Explanation:

i)

When the object is placed between the optical center and the principle focus of convex lens then the image is formed behind the object. The nature of the image is virtual because the light rays do not actually meet by seem to be meeting behind the object. The image formed is erect and magnified. The magnification is greater than 1 because the size of the image is greater than that of the object.

ii)

When the object is placed anywhere between the infinity and the optical center of a concave lens then the image is formed between the principal focus and the optical center of the lens. The image formed is virtual because the rays do not meet in actual, the image is diminished in the size and erect in position. The sign of the magnification is negative and lies between zero to one.

iii)

When the object is placed at 2f of the convex lens then the image formed is real, inverted and is of the same size as that of the object.
