Given:

An object is placed at a distance twice as that of the focal length of a diverging lens. Focal length is 30 cm.

To draw:

Ray diagram.

Calculation:

Let's calculate the image distance.

Focal length is 30 cm , so object distance will be 30 × 2 = 60 cm.

Applying Lens Formula:

  \rm{\therefore \:  \dfrac{1}{f}  =  \dfrac{1}{v}  -  \dfrac{1}{u} }

  \rm{ =  >  \:  \dfrac{1}{( - 30)}  =  \dfrac{1}{v}  -  \dfrac{1}{( - 60)} }

  \rm{ =  >  \:   - \dfrac{1}{ 30}  =  \dfrac{1}{v}   +  \dfrac{1}{60} }

  \rm{ =  >  \:    \dfrac{1}{v}   =   - \dfrac{1}{30}   -  \dfrac{1}{60} }

  \rm{ =  >  \:    \dfrac{1}{v}   =    \dfrac{ - 2 - 1}{60}  }

  \rm{ =  >  \:    \dfrac{1}{v}   =    \dfrac{ - 3}{60}  }

  \rm{ =  >  \:    \dfrac{1}{v}   =    \dfrac{ - 1}{20}  }

  \rm{ =  >  \:  v =  - 20 \: cm}

So, image characteristics:

  • Image is virtual.
  • Image is diminished.
  • Image is erect.

Refer to the attached diagram.
