Draw a ray diagram to show the path of the refracted ray in each of the following cases:; A ray of light incident on a concave lens is; (i) passing through its optical center.; (ii) parallel to its principal axis.; (iii) directed towards its principal axis(All India - 2014)

Ray diagrams for the different cases are given below

Explanation:

Refraction

It is bending of light rays when it passes from one medium to another .

Cause of refraction

Difference in the densities of medium due to which speed of light differ .

Let us see the rules to obtain image from concave lens

1st case : A ray of light incident on a concave lens passing through optical center .

When it passes through optical center , it goes straight .

2nd case :  A ray of light incident on a concave lens  parallel to its principal axis.

A ray of light incident on a concave lens  parallel to its principal axis diverges  after refraction but appear to  pass through focus .

3rd case :  A ray of light incident on a concave lens  directed towards its principal axis

A ray of light incident on a concave lens  directed towards its principal axis diverges but appear to pass through focus .
