Given :

EMF of each cell of the battery consisting of three cells = 1.5 V

Resistances of the resistors connected in parallel to this battery :

4\Omega , 6\Omega , 8 \Omega

An ammeter is connected across the 8 ohm resistor .

A voltmeter across all the three resistors .

To Find :

What are the readings of the ammeter and the voltmeter for the given set up  = ?

Solution :

The circuit diagram is shown in the attached figure .

Since we have to measure current across the 8 ohm resistor , the ammeter will be connected in series with the 8 ohm resistor .

Now  to find the reading of the ammeter :

I = \frac{V}{R}

    = \frac{3\times 1.5}{8}

    = \frac{4.5}{8}

 I = 0.5625 A

And the reading of voltmeter is :

= 1.5 \times 3

= 4.5 V

Hence the reading of ammeter is 0.5625 A and reading of voltmeter is 4.5 V .
