Concept:

  • Ohm's law
  • Resistances
  • Potential difference
  • V = IR
  • Series combination of cells
  • Series combination of resistors

Given:

  • 5 2V cells are connected, net voltage = 5*2 = 10 V
  • First resistance, R1 = 20 ohm
  • Second resistance R2 = 30 ohm

Find:

  • the value of the current flowing through the 20 ohm resistor
  • The potential difference across the 30-ohm resistor.

Solution:

The resistors are connected in series, so the net resistance is the sum of the individual resistances.

Rnet = R1 +R2 = 20 + 30 = 50 ohm

The net potential difference provided by the cells = 10 V

The current I = V/R

I = 10/50 = 0.2 A

The potential difference across the 30 ohm resistor

V = IR2

V = 0.2 * 30

V = 6V

The current is 0.2 A and the potential difference across the 30 ohm resistor is 6 V.
