The main parts and their functions are:
1. Ratched - advance the screw by turning it till the object to be measured in held gently in between the spindle of the screw and the stud.
2. Sleeve - it notes the base line and the base line
3. Thimble - circular scale is marked by the thimble
4. Circular scale - reads length correctly to 0.01 mm
5. Main scale - reads length to 1 mm.
