The order of symmetry of a geometric shape can be defined as the number of times a figure, when rotated, looks exactly the same as its original shape. The rotation is done only up to 360 degrees.

First order symmetry means that the figure needs to be rotated up to 360 degrees to come back to the original figure. Example is the  image of an arrow

Second order symmetry means that a figure can achieve its original two times when rotated through a 360 degree turn. An example is a rectangle. The shape always return to original position after 180 degree turns.  

Third order symmetry means that the figure  retains the original shape three times, through a 360 degree turn. An example is a triangle. The shape will return to original shape after 120 degree turns.

The order of symmetry follows the same principal as the above for all orders; fourth, fifth, sixth and so on
