Above is a diagram of a simple electrical circuit.

  • 'C' shows the cell. It is the most important component of the circuit as it is the only source of electricity in it. The circuit begins with the positive terminal of the cell and ends at the negative terminal.
  • 'S' shows the switch. It controls the circuit by breaking it's continuity. We can also use a fuse to disconnect a circuit.
  • 'R' represents the resistance or load of the circuit. This can be a simple resistance or any device (eg: bulb) connected to the cell.
  • 'V' shows the voltmeter. It measures the potential difference across the circuit. It is always connected parallel across a resistance.
  • 'A' shows the ammeter. it measures the amount of current flowing through the wire in a circuit. It is always connected in series with the resistance.
