Answer:

The most prevalent genus of cyanobacteria, also known as star jelly, troll's butter, spit of moon, falling star, witch's butter, and witch's jelly, can form colonies made up of filaments of moniliform cells encased in a gelatinous sheath of polysaccharides.

Structure of Nostoc-

  • Nostoc Building Unbranched, filamentous nostoc. A colony with many filaments is found in a gelatinous material.
  • The colonies could reach egg-size sizes. The filament is made up of a chain of cells that resemble beads.
  • Trichomes is the term for them. Cells might be cylindrical, spherical, or oval.
  • Heterocysts are differentiated cells that are present in the filament. They serve as nitrogen fixation sites. The enzyme nitrogenase fixes nitrogen.
  • A protective covering called a mucilaginous sheath surrounds each filament.
  • It takes in and holds onto water. The gelatinous coating contains proteins in addition to carbohydrates.
  • Colonies come in a variety of forms, dimensions, and hues. They primarily have greenish or bluish-green hues, but they can also be reddish-brown or yellow-green.
  • Additionally, extracellular pigments like nostocine and scytonemin are present. These pigments shield the cells from UV radiation together with some amino acids.
  • Each cell contains a substantial peptidoglycan-based cell wall. A cell's cytoplasm is divided into an outside, coloured portion due to chromoplasts positioned in the periphery and an inside, transparent portion. The colours in cells can vary.
  • Chlorophyll is present in cells (green pigment). Additionally present are phycocyanin (blue) and phycoerythrin (red). DNA lacks histones, and the inner cytoplasm contains a nuclear body or an immature nucleus.
