The basic structural and functional units of animal tissues and organs are animal cells.

Explanation:

  • This fundamental trait is not restricted to animal cells though. Eukaryotes include both animal and plant cells, therefore a plant cell has this property as well.
  • The presence of a cell wall, on the other hand, distinguishes plant cells from animal cells. Aside from that, an animal cell lacks plastids, particularly chloroplasts, which are involved in photosynthesis in plants.
