*PLEASE REFER TO THE PICTURE FOR THE DIAGRAM.
- Nostoc is a type of Gram-negative, photosynthetic cyanobacteria.
- This bacteria can be found in both terrestrial as well as the aquatic environment.
- In various species of Nostoc, there is an outer layer and an inner matrix of polysaccharides.
- The cells are spherical, oval, or cylindrical in shape.
- The differentiated cells in the filament are known as heterocysts, which are the sites of nitrogen fixation.
- The filament is covered by a protective mucilaginous sheath.
- Extracellular pigments such as nostocine, and scytonemin are also present that protect the body from UV rays.
- Other pigments are chlorophyll (green pigment). Phycocyanin (blue) and phycoerythrin (red).
