Take a beaker and fill it half with water as shown in Fig. above. Add some crystals of potassium permanganate to the water and heat it. Observe the water in the beaker carefully. Streams of coloured water move upwards from the bottom of the beaker and then move down.

When the water at the bottom gets heated and expands, the density of water becomes less. Hence, water becomes lighter and goes up to the top. At the top the cool water which has more density comes down. Thus, heat is transferred upwards by means of currents. These currents are called convectional currents. This way of transfer of heat which takes place in liquids and gases is called convection.
