Relative velocity is the velocity of one body with respect to another moving body with some velocity.
When the relative velocity is zero:
- When two objects move along a straight line has zero relative velocity, this means that they are travelling with the same constant velocity and in the same direction.
- In the position time graph, they are showing by two parallel lines. (as shown in the attached graph). The object A and B has zero relative speed.
When the relative velocity is negative or positive:
- The relative speed increase or decrease on the basis of the direction. If both objects are moving in the same directions. Then the relative velocity will decrease. If the moving objects are moving in opposite directions then the relative velocity will increase. But the both objects should have different velocities.
- When the one object has velocity greater than the other object. The relative velocity is positive. But it is mandatory that the separation between the objects changes with time.
