To show all the forces acting on a body or subsystem of bodies that are isolated from its surroundings, the free body diagram is used.
- The free-body diagram helps to visualize all the forces acting on a body.
- In the case of a car, the free body diagram shows the forces acting on it as follows.
- The engine applies a force which is represented as F in the figure.
- The force "f" in the figure shows the friction force applied by the road, which allows avoiding the sliding of the car.
- N1 and N2 represent the normal forces by each wheel, i.e shows the weight carried by each wheel.
- The gravitational force on the car is represented as W.
